Many students who wish to study abroad are worried about the distance between themselves and their family and friends. This blog hopes to inspire students to pursue studying abroad regardless of the distance with the help communication technology. Facebook, twitter, apps, and skype make it possible to stay connected to friends and family all over the world over the internet!

Keeping in contact with those you DONT want on your social media sites
There may be some of you who wish to communicate with others in a more formal fashion than social media, cell phone apps, or Skype. For example, I was close with a lot of coworkers before I left to study abroad, but I was not comfortable adding my coworkers (or bosses) to any of my social media sites, let alone video call them. The same goes for my professors. Whatever the circumstances, there are other methods of keeping these people up to date on your excursions. I recommend starting a blog. Blogs are great way to briefly update people on what you have been up to and still maintain a sense of personal privacy. You can add pictures (appropriate ones of course >.< ) to the blog as well.

I never really thought about blogs and what they could do until I made one. Now, I can definitely see the potential and how it could be used to communicate with others in a more formal fashion.
ReplyDeleteI have never thought about the possibility that there might be people I need to talk to who I don't want on my social media. I'm glad you mentioned this so now I will be even more prepared for when I study abroad.
ReplyDeleteSo this was interesting to me because when I was in New Zealand I made the decision to not have social media or a cell phone. This was such a new experience for me and it took a lot of getting used to. What I did come to find was that the longer I went without it the better I felt. I was glad to be away from computers and phones and the ideas of always needing to be able to be contacted.
ReplyDeleteThis is my parents up one side and down the other. They do not want any of that fancy stuff and honestly I have never thought of a blog before. I may actually try this this summer while I am studying abroad.
